How Perplexity finds and cites a Shopify store
Perplexity is a retrieval-first answer engine. It runs a search, pulls candidate sources, ranks them, and then writes an answer with numbered inline citations and source cards below.2 Unlike ChatGPT, which only links out when live browsing is active, Perplexity shows its sources on nearly every response. That is good news: there is a visible slot for your domain on almost every answer.
The two Perplexity crawlers
Perplexity runs two agents with different jobs, and the difference matters for how you control access.3

To be citable, you want PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt, and you want Perplexity’s published IP ranges permitted at your firewall or CDN so the crawler is not silently blocked. Blocking is done at the IP or WAF level, not through robots.txt, because the user-triggered agent does not honour it.
A note on the crawling controversy
In August 2025, Cloudflare published research alleging Perplexity used undeclared “stealth” crawlers to reach content on sites that had blocked all bots, rotating IP addresses to evade the blocks. Perplexity disputed the framing, arguing the fetches were user-driven and browser-like.4 For a merchant whose goal is to be cited, the practical stance is simple: you want to be crawlable anyway, so allow PerplexityBot and keep your content readable.
How to optimise Shopify pages for Perplexity citations
Prioritise recency
Independent analyses of Perplexity consistently name freshness as its single strongest signal - stronger than on any other engine. Recently published or updated pages are cited disproportionately, and new content can be picked up within a week or two.2
For a store, that means treating your best buying guides and category pages as living documents. Refresh them every two to three months, update the year, and keep prices and availability current.
Lead with the answer
Front-load a direct answer in the first 100 words of a page or section, then expand. Perplexity’s extraction favours self-contained passages, question-style headings, short steps, and comparison tables.2 This is the same answer-first craft we cover in writing for AI answer engines.
Add structured data
Product, FAQ and Article schema give Perplexity clean, labelled facts to lift. Build presence where Perplexity actually cites
This is the Perplexity-specific lever. A study of 680 million citations found Perplexity leans heavily on community and video sources: Reddit made up close to half of its top-ranked sources, with YouTube and review sites also weighted heavily.5 Being active in relevant Reddit threads, having video reviews on YouTube, and collecting genuine customer reviews feeds the sources Perplexity trusts most.
Perplexity Shopping: getting your products recommended
Perplexity launched “Buy with Pro” in November 2024, letting US Pro users buy from select merchants inside the app with one-click checkout.6 For merchants, the entry point is the free Perplexity Merchant Program.
Joining is free with no ongoing cost. Benefits include free product listings, API access, and a dashboard of shopping trends. Merchants who provide detailed product data get a better chance of being recommended.6
Shopify is integrated natively. How to tell if Perplexity is citing your store
