Key takeaways

  • You do not connect Shopify to ChatGPT to be found by shoppers. Shopify’s agentic storefronts send your products to ChatGPT automatically, and it’s on by default for eligible stores.1
  • ChatGPT is a discovery channel, not a checkout. Shoppers who find you in ChatGPT finish the purchase in your own store checkout, in a ChatGPT in-app browser or a new tab.2
  • The most common reason an eligible store gets excluded is missing store policies. Terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy all have to be filled in.2
  • Every Shopify store now auto-serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. You don’t need an app for these, and you can override them with theme templates.3
  • Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt stops citations, not product discovery. Catalog data goes to ChatGPT regardless of what your robots file says.3

This guide is for Shopify merchants who want their store to show up when a shopper asks ChatGPT what to buy.

If you’re looking to run your store from ChatGPT instead — checking orders, adding products, pulling analytics by chatting — that’s a different thing entirely, and it’s covered in our guide to the Shopify plugin for ChatGPT.

For the wider picture across every AI engine, start with our hub on answer engine optimization for Shopify. This piece goes deep on ChatGPT.

Why you can trust us

We have spent more than four years building inside the Shopify ecosystem. We built Fudge, an AI page builder and storefront editor with a 4.9 App Store rating that outputs native Shopify code, and the free AI Readiness Checker that scans any store for what AI engines can and cannot read.

Do you need to connect Shopify to ChatGPT?

No — and this is the single most common misconception we hear.

There is no integration to install, no plugin to connect, and no feed to submit for shoppers to find your products in ChatGPT. Shopify’s agentic storefronts feature pushes your product data to AI channels through Shopify Catalog, and it is active by default on eligible stores.1 You manage it in your Shopify admin under Sales channels → Agentic.

The confusion is understandable, because there is a Shopify plugin for ChatGPT. But it points the other way: it lets you manage your store from a chat window. It has nothing to do with whether shoppers can find you. Two different jobs:

What you wantWhat you actually need
Shoppers find your products in ChatGPTAgentic storefronts (on by default) — this guide
You manage your store from a chat windowThe Shopify plugin for ChatGPT

So the work isn’t connecting anything. It’s making sure you’re eligible, and that the data Shopify sends on your behalf is good enough to get picked.

The two ways your store shows up in ChatGPT

Product results come from Shopify Catalog. When someone asks ChatGPT for navy running shorts, it can return actual products with live price and stock. This is a structured data feed, not your website.1

Search citations come from the open web. When a question needs current information, ChatGPT searches, fetches pages it’s allowed to read, and quotes passages with inline links.4 This is your website — blog posts, buying guides, product pages.

These are optimised differently and the levers barely overlap. Product results are won on catalog data quality. Citations are won on crawlable, quotable content. You want both, and most merchants are only thinking about one.

One thing that has changed and trips people up: ChatGPT does not check out. Shopify is explicit that the ChatGPT channel is “a discovery-focused referrer platform” — shoppers complete the purchase in your own online store checkout, shown in a ChatGPT in-app browser or a new tab.2 Your branding, your payment methods, your customisations all apply. There’s no in-chat checkout setting to toggle, because there’s no in-chat checkout. (Direct in-channel checkout does exist for Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces.)1

There are also no Shopify fees for selling through ChatGPT. You pay standard payment processing and nothing else.2

Are you eligible? The five-point checklist

Being “on by default” only helps if you clear the bar. To sell on ChatGPT you need all of the following:2

  1. You sell to customers in the United States. Your business can be based anywhere — the requirement is about who you sell to.
  2. Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog.
  3. You’ve agreed to the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
  4. Your store policies are complete. Terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy, all filled in under Settings → Policies.
  5. Your products aren’t on OpenAI’s prohibited list. Anything in OpenAI’s prohibited products and services categories won’t appear in discovery results.

Point four is the one to check first. It costs nothing to fix, it’s a five-minute job, and an otherwise perfectly good store gets held out of the channel for it.

Two more constraints worth knowing. Put any legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters of your product descriptions, because that’s the window ChatGPT reads. And B2B-only products aren’t supported — agentic storefronts are direct-to-consumer only, and Shopify excludes wholesale products automatically where it can identify them.23

If you run B2B pricing through a third-party app or custom theme code rather than Shopify B2B, Shopify may not detect it, and those products can leak into AI channels at your D2C price.3

What ChatGPT can read: crawlers, robots.txt and your agent files

The robots.txt rule has a big asterisk on it now

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs, each controlled independently in your robots.txt:5

CrawlerWhat it doesDo you want it?
OAI-SearchBotBuilds the index behind ChatGPT search citationsYes — allow it
ChatGPT-UserFetches a page live when a user action triggers itYes — allow it
GPTBotCrawls content to train OpenAI’s modelsOptional — blocking it doesn’t affect search

If you disallow OAI-SearchBot, you can’t be cited in ChatGPT search. That part is unchanged, and it’s still the highest-impact fix most stores are missing.

Here’s the asterisk: blocking AI crawlers only affects open-web discoverability. It does not stop your product data from being sent by Shopify Catalog to the AI channels you’ve activated.3 These are two independent pipes. Merchants who block AI bots thinking they’ve opted out of ChatGPT have done no such thing — and merchants who allow everything thinking it guarantees product placement are also wrong.

On Shopify you edit this through the robots.txt.liquid template. Note that Shopify handles bot management at the network layer for you and doesn’t recommend running a proxy in front of your store.3 Changes take roughly a day to take effect.5

Your store already has agent discovery files

This is new and most merchants don’t know it. Every Shopify store automatically serves three URLs that AI agents read to understand how your store works:3

By default all three return your store name, URL, sitemap link, store policies, and discovery endpoints for other store information. You do not need a third-party app to generate these. If you installed an llms.txt app, you can probably uninstall it.

To customise them, add a theme template — agents.md.liquid changes all three, while llms.txt.liquid and llms-full.txt.liquid override just their own URL. A URL-specific template wins over agents.md.liquid. You’ll find these under Online Store → Edit code → Add a new template.

Go and load yourstore.com/agents.md right now. It takes ten seconds and tells you what agents currently understand about your business.

How to optimise Shopify pages for ChatGPT

Fix your catalog data first

Shopify Catalog lists your products with their title, description, options, images, price and availability, structured for agents to parse, and it keeps inventory and pricing current automatically.3 What it can’t do is invent detail you never wrote.

If your real product data lives in custom fields — metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes, delimiters inside product titles — use Shopify Catalog Mapping so it gets sourced correctly. This is the single most underrated lever for stores with custom data models, because Shopify is otherwise syndicating a hollowed-out version of your catalog.3

Get indexed in Bing

One analysis of ChatGPT search results found 87% of its citations matched Bing’s top organic results.6 If your store isn’t in Bing’s index, citation is unlikely. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap — almost no competing store bothers.

Serve crawlable, native code — not iframes

AI crawlers read your HTML source. They don’t execute a browser the way a shopper’s device does. Content injected through iframes or app-embed blocks can look fine to a human and be invisible to the crawler.

This is why native Shopify code beats app-embed architecture for citability. Liquid, HTML and CSS render server-side into the page source, so crawlers read your content directly. You can build native, crawlable pages in the Shopify store editor without adding iframe-bound apps.

To test it: open a product page, view source, and search for your product copy. If it’s missing from the source, a crawler is probably missing it too.

Add structured data

Product, FAQ, Article and Organization schema give ChatGPT clean, labelled facts to quote instead of guessing. A price, a rating or an answer becomes a data point the model can cite with confidence. Our guide to adding structured data in Shopify walks through it.

Write answer-first content

Lead each key section with a direct 40 to 60 word answer, then expand. Short paragraphs, headings phrased as questions, and self-contained passages match how the model extracts and quotes text. FAQ blocks work especially well, because each question maps to a real query and each answer is a complete, quotable passage. Our guide on writing for AI answer engines covers the craft.

Fill in your Shopify Knowledge Base

When ChatGPT answers a shopper’s question about your store through Shopify’s agentic channel, the store’s FAQs come from the free Shopify Knowledge Base app, which is not shown on your storefront. Shopify fills it in only from your settings and policies, so add your key pre-purchase answers there. See our Shopify Knowledge Base guide.

How to tell if ChatGPT is sending you traffic

You have three signals, and they’re better than they used to be.

Order attribution in your admin. Orders placed through AI channels now show up in Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution, so you can see where they came from.1 Agentic storefronts also gives you insights on search and sales performance of your products in those channels.

Referral traffic. Filter your analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com. Because ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout rather than buying in-chat, this traffic behaves like ordinary referral traffic and you can measure its conversion rate directly.

Manual prompting. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask and note whether you appear. Answers vary between runs, so track direction over time rather than any single result.

For a full measurement workflow across every engine, see our guide on tracking AI search mentions of your Shopify brand. For the same treatment applied to the other major answer engine, see optimising Shopify pages for Perplexity citations.

How to opt out

If you’d rather not appear, go to Sales channels → Agentic, deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me, click ChatGPT, deactivate Shopify Catalog access, and save. Allow up to seven days for your data to stop being shared.2

Be clear about what this does and doesn’t achieve. It stops Shopify Catalog from feeding ChatGPT. It does not stop your products being found through web crawling and indexing, the same way they’d surface in a Google search.2 To hide a product completely you’d set its status to Unlisted — but that also removes it from your sitemap, from Google, and from your own store search, which is a steep price.3

Opting out of ChatGPT doesn’t affect Shopify Catalog on other platforms like Shop.

FAQ

How do I connect my Shopify store to ChatGPT so people can find my products?

You don't need to connect anything. Shopify's agentic storefronts feature sends your product data to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog automatically, and it's active by default for eligible stores. You manage it under Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. The separate Shopify plugin for ChatGPT is for managing your own store from a chat window, not for being discovered by shoppers.

Why is my Shopify store not showing up in ChatGPT?

The most common causes are eligibility failures rather than SEO problems. Check that you sell to US customers, that you have agreed to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service, and above all that your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are complete in Settings > Policies. After that, look at catalog data quality, and check whether your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot, which would prevent search citations.

Can customers buy directly inside ChatGPT from my Shopify store?

No. Shopify describes the ChatGPT channel as a discovery-focused referrer. Shoppers who find your products in ChatGPT complete the purchase in your own online store checkout, displayed in a ChatGPT in-app browser or a new tab. Your branding, customisations and payment methods all apply. In-channel direct checkout does exist for Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces, but not for ChatGPT.

Do I need an llms.txt app for my Shopify store?

No. Every Shopify store automatically serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt with your store name, URL, sitemap, policies and discovery endpoints. /agents.md is the canonical one. If you want to change what they contain, add an agents.md.liquid, llms.txt.liquid or llms-full.txt.liquid template to your theme rather than installing an app.

Does blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt remove my products from ChatGPT?

No. Blocking crawlers in robots.txt only affects open-web discoverability and search citations. It does not stop Shopify Catalog from sending your product data to the agentic storefront channels you have active. To stop that, you have to remove Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT under Sales channels > Agentic.

Does it cost anything to sell on ChatGPT through Shopify?

No. Shopify states there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT, and you pay only your standard payment processing fees. Because checkout happens in your own store, the transaction is priced like any other order.

Does blocking GPTBot stop me from appearing in ChatGPT search?

No. GPTBot only gathers training data for OpenAI's models. Search citations are powered by OAI-SearchBot, a separate crawler. You can block GPTBot to stay out of training while still allowing OAI-SearchBot so your store can be cited.
