Key takeaways
- Configure Shopify Markets before installing anything. Local currencies through Shopify Payments, up to 20 languages, subfolder domains with automatic hreflang, and duties collection at checkout are all native.
- Our top translation pick is Weglot - 4.5 stars across 788 reviews as of September 2026, with the deepest content coverage in the category. T Lab is the value pick at 4.9 stars from $11.99/month.
- Currency converter apps are mostly redundant in 2026. Shopify Payments converts and charges in the shopper’s local currency server-side, so a converter app usually adds script weight for nothing.
- Duties are where apps still earn their fee. Zonos guarantees landed cost and remits taxes while you stay merchant of record; Managed Markets hands the whole problem to Global-e.
- No app in this list localizes your pages. Translation apps swap strings - the market-specific landing pages that convert are storefront work, and Fudge builds and translates those in native theme code.
Selling internationally on Shopify used to mean an app for everything: currency, translation, duties, even the country selector. In 2026 the best Shopify international apps are the ones that fill the genuine gaps left by Shopify Markets, because the platform now handles currency conversion, translated locales, local domains, and duty collection natively.
That changes how you should shop this category. The right order is Markets first, then apps only where native runs out - deeper translation workflows, guaranteed landed costs, cross-border logistics.
We compared eight options across translation, duties and tax, shipping, and merchant-of-record services. Every rating, review count, and price below comes from the live Shopify App Store listing or Shopify’s documentation, checked in September 2026.
Our verdict
- Best way to localize the pages themselves: Fudge - ask it to build or translate a market-specific page and it ships as native theme code. Our own site runs in German and French this way.
- Best translation app for most stores: Weglot - the widest content coverage (checkout, notifications, third-party app content), 4.5 stars across 788 reviews.
- Best value translation: T Lab - 4.9 stars, a generous free plan, paid tiers from $11.99/month.
- Best translation plus currency switcher in one app: Transcy - most useful where Shopify Payments is not available.
- Best for hands-on translation control: Langify.
- Best for duties and landed cost: Zonos Duty and Tax - guaranteed duties at checkout while you stay merchant of record.
- Best for international shipping operations: Easyship.
- The enterprise route: Global-e CrossBorder - the engine behind Shopify’s Managed Markets, available directly to large brands.
Why you can trust us
We have been in the Shopify space for over four years and have worked with hundreds of stores, several of them selling across borders. We build Fudge, an AI storefront editor with a 4.9 rating on the Shopify App Store.
Localization is not theoretical for us. Our own marketing site runs in German and French, so the tradeoffs in this guide are ones we live with on our own pages, not just our customers’.
How we evaluated these apps
Five things separate an international app worth paying for from redundant weight:
- Does it work with Markets, not around it? Apps that fight the native market and locale structure - overlay widgets, translations outside your localized URLs - create SEO and checkout problems that surface months later.
- Storefront weight. Client-side translation and currency scripts rewrite the page after it paints, which costs speed and causes layout shift. Our guide on multi-currency Shopify speed covers why server-side always wins.
- SEO correctness. Translated content must be server-rendered and indexable on localized URLs with hreflang intact, or the new market never ranks.
- Total cost at scale. Word quotas, per-order fees, and percentages of duties compound. The headline plan price is rarely the real number.
- Whether native already does it. An app has to add something Shopify Markets does not. Several once-essential categories no longer pass this test.
A note on method: this comparison is based on the live App Store listings, each vendor’s public documentation, and our work on the theme layer of international storefronts. We have not run a hands-on install of every app for this guide.
Start here: what Shopify Markets covers natively (free)
Before paying anyone, configure what your plan already includes. Shopify Markets is the built-in framework for selling internationally from one store, and it covers four things merchants still buy apps for:
- Local currencies. With Shopify Payments, prices are converted server-side using automatic or manual exchange rates, with rounding rules and fixed per-market prices, and the customer pays in their own currency at checkout.1
- Translated locales. Every plan except the entry tier sells in up to 20 languages from a single store, and Shopify adds hreflang tags and localized sitemaps automatically.2
- Local domains and subfolders. Markets serves each region on subfolders like
/fr/, subdomains, or country domains, with the SEO plumbing generated for whichever structure you pick. - Duties at checkout. Duty and import tax collection at checkout is available on all Shopify plans, so shoppers pay the landed cost upfront instead of getting a courier bill.3
For the strategic frame - all seven pillars from pricing to catalog - see our Shopify Markets guide. For the click-by-click configuration, our Shopify Markets setup guide walks through the admin flow.
The first translation tool is also free. Shopify Translate & Adapt is the first-party translation app: a side-by-side editor, auto-translation for up to two languages, unlimited manual translations, and per-market content adaptation. It holds 4.5 stars across 1,397 reviews and carries a Built for Shopify badge.4 Start here; the paid apps below are for when its two auto-translated languages or manual workflow run out.
Why no currency apps made this list: this category is essentially solved natively. A third-party converter runs JavaScript in the browser to rewrite prices native Markets would have rendered correctly on the server, so for any store where Shopify Payments is available, the app adds cost and script weight without adding capability.
Where native runs out:
- Translation automation at scale. Two free auto-translated languages and manual editing do not cover ten locales, app content, or glossary-driven AI workflows.
- Guaranteed duties and tax remittance. Native collection estimates and collects, but nobody guarantees the amount or files your IOSS and UK VAT returns.
- Shipping execution. Markets prices the order; it does not compare couriers, print DDP labels, or generate customs paperwork.
- Localized pages. Settings localize the store frame. Pages that persuade each market are storefront work no setting produces.
The best Shopify international apps, ranked
1. Weglot - best translation app for most stores
Rating: 4.5 stars, 788 reviews. Free plan; paid from $17/month.5 (As of September 2026.)
Weglot is the most complete translation layer you can put on a Shopify store. It translates into 110+ languages using DeepL, Google, and Microsoft engines, and covers the content most apps miss: checkout, email notifications, and third-party app content like reviews and pop-ups. Translations are served on indexable localized URLs following Google’s guidelines, you can train its AI on your brand voice or order professional translations, and it carries a Built for Shopify badge.
Downsides: the pricing meter is words, not languages. The free plan covers one language and 2,000 words, Starter at $17/month covers 10,000 words, and even Pro at $87/month caps at five languages and 200,000 words - a large catalog with long descriptions burns quota fast, and bigger allowances are sold outside the App Store tiers (check the live listing for current plans). Weglot also bills externally, separate from your Shopify invoice.
2. T Lab - best value translation
Rating: 4.9 stars, 952 reviews. Free plan; paid from $11.99/month.6 (As of September 2026.)
T Lab has the best rating in this comparison, held across nearly a thousand reviews, and the most generous free plan: AI translations for 500 products plus 20 collections and articles, up to 20 store languages, and unlimited manual translations. Paid tiers stay cheap - Pro at $11.99/month extends AI translation to five languages, and Premium at $59.99/month offers unlimited AI translations when you plug in your own DeepL, Google, or ChatGPT API key. It works inside Shopify’s native translation system, integrates with Markets, and has a Built for Shopify badge.
Downsides: the bring-your-own-key model that makes Premium cheap also means managing a separate API account and its billing. And the per-resource quotas - products, collections, articles counted separately per tier - take a careful read before you know which plan your catalog actually needs.
3. Transcy - best translation plus currency switcher in one
Rating: 4.5 stars, 2,489 reviews. Free plan; paid from $14.90/month.7 (As of September 2026.)
Transcy has the largest third-party review base in this roundup. It translates 147+ languages with AI engines (OpenAI, DeepL, Gemini), converts 169+ currencies in real time, and detects visitor location to show the right language and currency automatically. The free plan is unusual in having no word or pageview limits (one language, one currency), and the app integrates with Markets and carries a Built for Shopify badge.
Downsides: be skeptical of the currency half. If Shopify Payments covers your region, native Markets already converts and charges in local currency on the server, and a client-side switcher duplicates that work with extra script. Choose Transcy for the combined translation-and-switcher admin, or because Shopify Payments is not available to you - not for currency conversion alone.
4. Langify - best for hands-on translation control
Rating: 4.7 stars, 680 reviews. Free plan; paid tiers $17.50 to $59.95/month.8 (As of September 2026.)
Langify’s pitch is control. It translates store content, images, and third-party app text, and its workflow is built around reviewing and owning every string rather than trusting bulk AI output sight unseen. That makes it a fit for stores treating one or two markets as first-class storefronts - an owner-reviewed German shop rather than ten machine-drafted locales. It holds a Built for Shopify badge and a 4.7 rating from a developer that has been in this category longer than most.
Downsides: hands-on cuts both ways. If you want many locales fast, the AI-first tools above get there with less labor. Feature allocation across the $17.50, $29.95, and $59.95 tiers shifts - check the live listing for current plans before picking one.
5. Zonos Duty and Tax - best for guaranteed landed cost
Rating: 4.5 stars, 151 reviews. From $2,500/year plus $2 per order and 10% of duties, taxes, and fees.9 (As of September 2026.)
Zonos solves the ugliest part of cross-border selling: what an order really costs once customs is done with it. It calculates guaranteed duties, taxes, and fees in checkout so the shopper pays the full landed cost upfront - and if the customs bill comes in higher than calculated, Zonos pays the difference. It also handles cross-border tax registration and remittance (IOSS, UK VAT), the compliance work that otherwise lands on your accountant, all while you remain the merchant of record with your own checkout. Built for Shopify badge; running since 2017.
Downsides: the price. Standard is $2,500/year and Premium $4,000/year, plus $2 per order and 10% of the duties, taxes, and fees collected (those per-order costs can be passed to the customer). Below real cross-border volume, native duty collection covers the basics for free - Zonos earns its fee when the guarantee and the remittance start replacing genuine reconciliation pain.
6. Easyship - best for international shipping operations
Rating: 4.1 stars, 368 reviews. Free plan (50 shipments/month); paid from $29/month.10 (As of September 2026.)
Easyship is the logistics half of international selling. It compares rates across 550+ couriers with discounts up to 91% off, prints labels in batches, generates customs paperwork, and ships both DDP and DDU. Live checkout rates arrive on the $29/month Plus plan, tax and duties at checkout on the $69/month Premier plan, and the $99/month Scale plan reaches 10,000 shipments a month.
Downsides: 4.1 stars is the lowest rating in this roundup, so read the recent reviews that match your fulfillment pattern before committing. And its duty support is estimates plus DDP labels, not a guarantee - nobody pays the difference if customs disagrees, which is precisely what Zonos charges for.
7. Global-e CrossBorder - the enterprise merchant-of-record route
Rating: 4.5 stars, 7 reviews. Free to install; commercial terms agreed directly with Global-e.11 (As of September 2026.)
Global-e is the cross-border operator behind Shopify’s own Managed Markets.12 The direct app serves 200+ destinations with localized pricing, duties and taxes, shipping services, and Global-e acting as merchant of record - the model where legal responsibility for the sale, and the compliance that comes with it, shifts off your business. It is aimed at established brands, and the listing only supports eligible stores.
Downsides: seven reviews is not a review base, because this is not really a self-serve app - it is an enterprise service with a Shopify connector. For US-based stores on Basic and up (plus certain stores in Canada and the UK), the practical way to get Global-e’s machinery is Managed Markets, which packages the same merchant-of-record model inside Shopify with guaranteed duties and tax remittance.12 Talk to both before signing either.

The part no international app does: the pages
Every app above moves strings, money, or parcels. None of them builds the page that convinces a shopper in Munich or Lyon to buy.
Translation apps translate what exists. A machine-translated English homepage is still an English homepage, just in German words - the offer, the proof, the payment logos, and the framing all stay foreign. What moves conversion abroad is localized landing pages built for each market, and no app in this roundup produces those.
That is the layer Fudge builds. You describe the page once, and Fudge generates on-brand localized variants as native Liquid in your theme - no overlay widget, no extra script, and the output stays in your theme even if you later switch translation apps. We use this workflow ourselves: Fudge’s own site runs in German and French, generated from a single source rather than hand-built three times.
Fudge overlaps with the translation apps at the page layer: ask it to translate or localize a page or section and the result is native theme code rather than a synced string layer. A dedicated translation app still earns its keep for continuously syncing every catalog string across locales, the duties and shipping apps it does not touch, and Fudge owns the market-specific pages your campaigns land on. For the full method - what to adapt per market and the SEO rules that keep localized pages ranking - see our guide on localizing Shopify landing pages.
How to choose
- Starting out: configure Markets, install Translate & Adapt, and spend nothing until something concrete runs out.
- Two to five serious language markets: Weglot for the widest coverage, T Lab for the same job on a smaller bill.
- Translation and a currency switcher in one admin: Transcy - especially where Shopify Payments is not available.
- You want to review every string: Langify.
- Cross-border volume with customs pain: Zonos if you want to stay merchant of record; Managed Markets if you would rather hand the problem to Global-e.
- Shipping across many carriers: Easyship, eyes open about the rating.
- Enterprise scale: talk to Global-e directly and compare it against Managed Markets.
Whichever apps you install, the sequence stays the same: native Markets first, apps for the genuine gaps, and localized pages for the growth.
FAQ
Weglot is the strongest overall pick as of September 2026 - 4.5 stars across 788 reviews, with coverage that extends to checkout, notifications, and third-party app content on indexable localized URLs. T Lab is the value alternative at 4.9 stars with paid tiers from $11.99/month. Start with the free first-party Shopify Translate & Adapt app and upgrade when its limits show.
Usually not. Shopify Markets with Shopify Payments converts prices into the shopper's local currency on the server, with rounding rules and fixed per-market prices, so a converter app duplicates native behavior while adding client-side script weight. The exception is stores in regions where Shopify Payments is not available - that is where an app like Transcy still earns a place.
For a first market or two, yes - it is free, first-party, holds 4.5 stars across 1,397 reviews, and auto-translates up to two languages with unlimited manual translations. It runs out when you need automation across many locales, coverage of app and checkout content, or glossary-driven AI workflows. That is the point where Weglot or T Lab earns its fee.
Shopify can calculate and collect duties and import taxes at checkout on all plans, and those orders then ship with DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) labels so the customer is not billed again at the door. Zonos goes further by guaranteeing the amounts - it pays the difference if customs charges more - and by handling tax registration and remittance. Managed Markets removes the burden entirely by making Global-e the merchant of record.
Who the seller legally is. With Zonos you remain the merchant of record: it guarantees landed cost at checkout and remits cross-border taxes, but customers still buy from your business through your checkout. With Managed Markets, Global-e becomes the merchant of record for international orders and takes on compliance, duties, local payments, and DDP shipping - a bigger handoff with less control.
Yes, at the storefront layer. Ask Fudge to translate or localize a page or section and it writes the result as native theme code - our own site runs in German and French this way. A translation app still makes sense for continuously syncing every catalog string across locales; Fudge covers the pages and sections that carry your international campaigns.
