POS & Retail
Compact layout redesign.
Shopify POS got a new compact layout optimized for high-volume retail. The redesigned interface reduces the number of taps to complete common actions - adding items, applying discounts, processing returns. In a busy store during peak hours, those saved taps add up.
Tap to Pay on Android and iPhone in more countries.
Tap to Pay - which lets merchants accept contactless payments using just their phone - expanded to additional countries in November. No card reader required. For merchants at markets, pop-ups, or anywhere a card terminal is inconvenient, this is a meaningful step up.
View and edit customer metafields in POS.
Staff can now view and edit customer metafields directly from the POS customer screen. This covers loyalty points, birthday information, clothing sizes, and any other custom data you’re storing on customer profiles.
Practically, this means a staff member can look up a customer, see their loyalty tier, update their size preference after a fitting, or note a birthday - without switching to another system. The data lives in Shopify and is editable wherever the customer interaction happens.
Returns
Returns without a receipt or order number.
Customers can now make returns without providing a receipt or order number. Staff can look up the transaction by customer name, email, or card used for the original purchase. This removes a common friction point - customers who can’t find their confirmation email or receipt are no longer stuck.
Refunds to gift card.
Merchants can now refund returns to a store gift card instead of back to the original payment method. This is useful for managing cash flow and keeping spend within the store. Some merchants have long used this as a standard policy - Shopify now supports it natively.
