Key takeaways
- Add shipping disclaimers to product descriptions for product-level visibility.
- Use a Theme Editor notice or announcement block to show disclaimers in the cart.
- Post-purchase disclaimers and order status messages go in Settings > Checkout > Order status page.
- Fudge can add a custom disclaimer banner to the cart page or drawer in any style you want.
Shipping disclaimers protect your business and set accurate buyer expectations. Whether it’s a seasonal delay notice, an international shipping caveat, or a perishable goods warning, the key is placing the disclaimer where buyers will actually see it before they complete the purchase.
Why you can trust us
We’ve worked with hundreds of Shopify merchants on their cart and checkout communication. We also built Fudge — an AI storefront editor with a 5.0 rating on the Shopify App Store.
Option 1 - Add to the product description
The most straightforward placement. Add the disclaimer text directly to the relevant product’s description.
Step 1. Open the product in Shopify Admin.
Step 2. In the Description field, add the disclaimer - usually at the bottom, below the main content.
Step 3. Use bold text to draw attention: “Please note: this product ships within 5-7 business days. International orders may be subject to customs delays.”
Step 4. Save.
When to use: Product-specific disclaimers (e.g., estimated production times for made-to-order items, or special handling for fragile items).
Limitation: Only visible on the product page itself. Buyers who go directly to cart won’t see it.
Option 2 - Add a notice to the cart page or drawer
Getting a disclaimer in front of buyers at the cart stage, before checkout, is the most effective placement for purchase-critical information.
Via Theme Editor:
Step 1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
Step 2. Navigate to the Cart page (or look for Cart settings in the sidebar).
Step 3. Look for a block option like “Notice”, “Rich text”, or “Custom HTML” in the cart section settings.
Step 4. Add your disclaimer text.
Step 5. Save.
Not all themes expose editable content blocks in the cart. If yours doesn’t, the next option covers this.
Option 3 - Order status page message (post-purchase)
For disclaimers that need to appear after the order is placed - like “Your order will be processed within 2-3 days” or “You may receive customs forms via email”:
Step 1. Go to Settings > Checkout.
Step 2. Scroll to Order status page.
Step 3. In the Additional scripts field, add HTML for your message.
This is post-purchase only. It won’t catch buyers before they complete the order, but it’s useful for managing expectations after purchase.
How to add a shipping policy link in Shopify
Your shipping policy (set in Settings > Policies) is linked automatically in your checkout footer. To add a link to it in other locations:
- Footer navigation: Online Store > Navigation > Footer menu > Add menu item > link to
/policies/shipping-policy - Product page text: Add a hyperlink in the product description pointing to your shipping policy page
- Cart page: Include a short “See our full shipping policy” link in the cart disclaimer text
Adding a custom disclaimer banner with Fudge
For a disclaimer that’s visually distinct, prominent, and placed exactly where you want it, Fudge can build a custom implementation.
Example prompts:
-
“Add a soft yellow notice banner at the top of the cart drawer that says ‘Note: orders placed after December 18 will ship in the New Year.’ Show it only from December 15 to January 5.”
-
“Add a small disclaimer text below the checkout button on the cart page: ‘International orders may be subject to import duties. We are not responsible for customs fees.’ Style it as small grey text.”
-
“Add a perishables notice below the product information on all products tagged ‘perishable’: ‘This product contains perishable ingredients. We ship Monday to Wednesday only to ensure freshness.’”
Fudge generates the change as a draft - you review before it goes live.
Best practices for shipping disclaimers
Be specific. “May be delayed” is less useful than “Allow an additional 7-10 business days during peak season.” Specificity builds trust.
Use the right placement. Product-level disclaimers on the product page. Purchase-critical disclaimers in the cart or checkout. Post-purchase information on the confirmation page.
Keep it concise. Long blocks of disclaimer text get skipped. One to two sentences, clearly formatted.
Update seasonally. Shipping disclaimers should reflect current lead times and any active delays. An outdated disclaimer (saying normal delivery times when you have a backlog) damages trust and generates returns.
