Animation can make a Shopify store feel polished and modern - or busy and slow, if done poorly. The right approach depends on what you want to animate and how much control you need. Here’s a breakdown of every option.

Option 1 - GIFs

Best for: Simple animations, inline content areas, animated icons or badges.

GIFs are the most accessible option because they work anywhere Shopify accepts an image - product galleries, rich text editors, Theme Editor image blocks.

How to use: Upload a GIF the same way you’d upload a JPEG. Shopify will autoplay it wherever it’s embedded.

Downsides: GIFs are large files relative to their visual quality. Keep them small (under 2MB), use them sparingly, and avoid using them for large hero-style animations. For anything more than a small accent, MP4 video is more performant.


Option 2 - CSS animations

Best for: Entrance animations (fade-in, slide-up), hover effects, subtle motion on product cards or text.

CSS animations are implemented directly in your theme’s code - they add zero weight to page loads compared to GIFs or video. They can be applied to any HTML element: images, buttons, text, banners.

Common CSS animations useful in Shopify stores:

CSS animations require editing your theme’s code directly. If you’re not comfortable with that, describe what you want to Fudge: “Fade in the hero text from below when the page loads. Option 3 - Lottie animations

Best for: High-quality vector animations, animated icons, infographic-style animations.

Lottie is a format developed by Airbnb that plays Adobe After Effects animations as lightweight JSON files. They’re crisp at any size, small in file size, and look far better than GIFs for complex animations.

How to add Lottie to Shopify: Lottie isn’t supported natively in Shopify’s Theme Editor. Options:

Option 4 - Video backgrounds

Best for: Hero sections, full-width banners, immersive page headers.

Many modern Shopify themes support a video background for the hero section. A short, looping MP4 plays silently behind your headline and CTA.

How to check if your theme supports it:

  1. Go to Theme Editor > click the hero/banner section
  2. Look for a “Video” tab or “Background video” option alongside the image selector

If supported, upload an MP4 file or paste a video URL. The video loops silently and the image acts as a fallback on mobile or if the video fails to load.

If your theme doesn’t support video backgrounds natively, it can be added via code. Describe it to Fudge: “Add a looping MP4 video background to the homepage hero. Keep the headline and button on top. Use the existing hero image as a fallback on mobile.”


Option 5 - Theme-built animations
